MOBY is my first solar roller and uses a 1381 Solar Engine. It uses a 1381 J , 2N3904, 2N3906, 2.2 K resistor and 0.33 F capacitor. The 1381 J triggers when the voltage across the capacitor is 2.97 volts. The whole SE was free formed according to the instructions in www.beam-online.com - Free forming the 1381 SE
Those of you in India must be wondering from where I got the 1381, the solar cell , 0.33 F caps and the pager motors. Guess what guys. They were sponsored by a Mr. X (he wishes to be anonymous) , living in US.
Sorry guys but I still don't know where to find 1381's . So you may have to settle with the FLED's, unless you have some means to procure 1381's from outside India. FLED's or Flashing LED's are locally available in India. These LED's have inbuilt circuitry to keep switching on and off without having to disconnect the supply to it. I have found it in one shop in Chennai. The pager motors are exactly the same as found in Mobilink pagers. You can try to to find them in second hand market. The problem will be removing the weight from the shaft. I finally found high value capacitors in Chennai like 0.33F and 1F. But they are a little expensive , around Rs.50 - Rs.150. Didn't even bother to bargain.
For the solar cells use those from calculators in series and parallel combination to generate the required voltage and current. Parallel = more current, series = more voltage. The solar cell I have used was imported.
